Ooni Fyra – Best Wood Fired Pizza Oven

Editor's Choice
Ooni Fyra
9.9/10Our Score

The Ooni Fyra Pizza Oven is the newer version of the Ooni 3. It was actually one of the first pizza ovens that used wood pellets. It’s also the model that I use on a weekly basis.

It features a “hopper” on the back so that you can continue to add more fuel to the fire. This allows it to burn for longer.

On the door there is also a handy viewing hole, so you can see how the flame and the pizza is doing.

It’s lightweight and incredibly sturdy. Overall the quality is great with a dome effect along the top to help with heat distribution.

Bertello’s wood fired pizza oven was first seen on the Shark Tank TV show. Since then it has been selling around the world.

Like the Karu it uses wood and charcoal but you can also buy an addon to use gas. They do actually provide a complete package which includes the addon, along with other accessories such as peel, cover and thermometer.

Featuring a stylish design with 4 legs to make it sturdy. It has a lot of positive reviews.

Even though it’s not the cheapest, it is great value for money.

Which Type Of Pizza Oven Is Best For You?

The first thing you need to do is decide on what type of pizza oven is going to be best for you and your needs. Each has their own pros and cons, but it’s important to know which is which.

Gas Pizza Oven

Gas pizza ovens are incredibly easy to use, which is why they ‘re very popular. Simply turn the gas on and wait for it to reach temperature and then get cooking.

One of the great things about gas pizza ovens is that they do not take very long to reach the right temperature.

You can also control the temperature better, so your able to cook a wide variety of foods.

Compared to wood pizza ovens, they’re also a lot easier to clean.

Wood Fired Pizza Oven

A wood-fired pizza oven was the first type of oven I got, and is still my go to when I’ve got plenty of time to make pizzas. They give your pizza the most amazing flavour!

If you want to be as authentic as possible then, wood fired is the way to go. They do take a little longer to warm up, you need to continue refuelling them and cleaning is a little harder. But all of this is worth it for the experience and the amazing tasting pizza afterwards.

Since they use wood pellets, these are often easier to store. (They’re also often cheaper than gas)

I also like taking my wood-fired pizza oven camping. (The amazing smell also grabs the attention of the tents around me!)

Multi Fuel Pizza Oven

Multi fuel pizza ovens are a kind of best of both worlds option. These allow you to use gas as well as wood. (although usually wooden blocks and NOT wood pellets).

These do tend to be more expensive.

It’s worth noting that sometimes you may need to buy the gas attachment separately.

BBQ Pizza Ovens

BBQ Pizza ovens are a good option if you want to be able to make not just pizza but veggies, fish and even slow cooked meats.

You can usually use charcoal or wood, however can be used on gas BBQs as well.

They cannot get as hot as wood fired pizza ovens, so its harder to make traditional neapolitan pizza. They’ll normally be used to make New York style pizzas.

If you want to get into making your own made pizza, without investing in a dedicated pizza oven then they can be a good option.

A major drawback is that they’re not very portable, as you’ll always need access to your BBQ.

Pizza Oven Buyers Guide – What To Look For

Type Of Fuel Source

There are three main types of fuel sources for pizza ovens: gas, wood, and charcoal.

Gas-fired pizza ovens are the most popular type. They are easy to use and produce consistent results. Wood-fired ovens produce a more authentic pizza crust, but can be more difficult to use. Charcoal-fired ovens are the most difficult to use, but can produce the best results.

You can also get multi fuel pizza ovens that can use a combination of these fuels.

It feels a little more traditional to make a pizza using wood, however they taste just as good with gas.

I find using wood a little more fun, although if time is more of an issue and I want to get the oven heated up quickly then gas is by far the best option.

I don’t really like using charcoal as I find it can ruin the flavour of the pizza and also tends to be very hard to keep the temperature up.

Portability

Do you need to be able to move the pizza oven around? If you do then you might want to think about how portable the oven is.

If you know that it’s going to stay in one place in your garden, portability is not that important. For this I’d go for a gas or multi fuel oven and be tempted towards the 16 inch ones.

However, if your looking to take your pizza oven camping or enjoy a fresh slice whilst sitting on the beach, portability is going to be important.

If this is the case then i’d recommend going for a wood fired or multi fuel. It’s going to be much easier to carry this and some wood, instead of trying to carry a gas bottle.

I love taking my Fyra camping with me.

Size

One of the most important things to think about when choosing a pizza oven is the size.

First you need to decide on where you are going to put the oven. Do you have a specific spot picked out or is there a certain area that would be best?

Is it going in the garden or on your patio?

Once you know that, you need to measure the dimensions of the space and make sure the oven will fit. Most pizza ovens are quite large, so make sure you have enough room.

Amount Of Pizzas Plan To Cook

If you plan on cooking a lot of pizzas or if you want to bake large pizzas, you should think about how many pizzas your pizza oven can cook.

The great thing about pizza ovens is that they do bake the pizza in as little as 60 seconds.

If your just doing 2-3 pizzas then a 12 inch oven would be enough.

Although if you plan on putting on pizza parties or cooking other things such as steak, vegetables or fish then you might need more space. The 16 inch ovens would be perfect for this.

The 16 inch also allows you to cook multiple things at the same time.

Design

The design of the pizza oven might not be the most important aspect but it does need to be a consideration.

If you have a more modern home then you might want to consider a stainless steel pizza oven.

These look amazing and will become the centre piece of any garden or patio.

If you prefer a more rustic style, then brick or clay pizza ovens would be better suited. These give off a really authentic feel and look

Pricing

Price is defiantly something to think about when purchasing a pizza oven.

You can get cheap ones for around $60 but these are generally not very good quality.

I would recommend spending a little more and getting one that’s going to last you a long time and won’t break the bank.

The best thing to do is set yourself a budget and then find the best one within that.

You can get some great pizza ovens for around $350-$800.

Final Thoughts

Now that you have seen some of the best pizza ovens on the market, it is time for you to make a decision.

What type of oven will work best for your home?

Do you want a gas or wood fired oven?

Once you have made this decision, the next step is to find the perfect size and portability.

Do you need an oven that can be moved around your backyard or do you want one that stays in one place?

The last question to ask yourself is what fuel source do you want?

There are many options out there so make sure to choose the one that works best for your lifestyle. We hope this article has helped make your decision easier!
